Smyrna’s City Council Monday tabled a decision to Jan. 5 on adding health and other benefits to employee couples in same-sex marriages.

Smyrna and Cobb’s five other cities already comply with a federal IRS requirement to provide city employees in legally recognized, same-sex marriages with retirement survivor benefits.

That mandate doesn’t cover health benefits.

City Manager Eric Taylor said no employee has asked for the benefit extension. The council first considered adding benefits a year ago and held a public hearing on the issue Oct. 27.
