Fire destroyed an apartment building Friday afternoon and left 27 people -- including 16 children -- burned out of their homes at the Regency Square Apartments in Smyrna.

More than 30 firefighters battled the heavy smoke and flames that tore through the eight-unit apartment building in the 1800 block of Davie Circle just after 12:30 p.m. Cobb County fire department spokeswoman Denell Boyd said the fire started in a ground-floor apartment and spread quickly. Seven of the eight apartments that were destroyed had been occupied.

"Horrible, horrible, very horrible. I can't believe it," resident Nadine Versailles told Channel 2 Action News. "Christmas is Sunday, and I don't know what I'm going to do next. As long as my kids are OK, God will bless us."

Red Cross volunteers are helping the displaced families. Five of the families were relocated to vacant units in the complex.

Investigators said it was too early to know what started the fire. Boyd said there had been three fires at the complex over the past year.
