A small plane that crashed overnight near Marineland in northeast Florida was en route to St. Simons Island, according to a media report.

According to the FAA, the Piper PA44 was about 20 miles north of Ormond Beach, Fla., when it lost radar contact about 11 p.m. Thursday, television website news4jax.com reported.

Patrick Murphy, a spokesman for Sunrise Aviation Flight School, said the plane was on a routine training flight. It took off in Ormond Beach and was to land on St. Simons Island and return immediately.

Murphy told the website that an instructor and a commercial flight student were on board. He did not release their names until investigators confirm the information.

Several local law enforcement agencies as well as the U.S. Coast Guard are searching for survivors.
