Twenty-six units of public housing on Carruth Street in Acworth will be torn down so the Marietta Housing Authority can construct a four-story, 108-unit apartment building for seniors.

The public housing residents will be given Section 8 housing vouchers, said City Manager Brian Bulthuis. The housing authority owns and operates the housing project, which was built in the early 1960s. Twelve single-story buildings will be destroyed.

Raymond Buday, authority executive director, said the entire project should cost about $14 million. Plans call for the senior building to have 68 one-bedroom units, 40 two-bedroom units, a 3,500-square-foot clubhouse, a community garden and open courtyards.

The authority will lease the senior apartment building on a long-term basis to Walton Communties, an apartment developer and operator, Buday said.

The Acworth City Council recently approved rezoning the 3.7 acres from single-family residential to senior living community.
