DeKalb County police continued to search Friday for the gunman who fired multiple shots into a Maybach on I-20 Thursday afternoon, killing a man inside luxury car.
A spokeswoman for the DeKalb Medical Examiner’s office told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution at 9 a.m. Friday investigators had not positively identified the victim.
The incident happened in the area of I-20 westbound at Glenwood Avenue around 5:15 p.m.
Witnesses told police that shots were fired from a white SUV, which fled the scene, DeKalb police spokeswoman Mekka Parish said.
An off-duty Atlanta police officer was the first person on the scene, stopping after noticing gunshot damage to a vehicle that was partially in the right lane and on the shoulder of the interstate. Because all the doors to the vehicle were locked, the officer broke a rear window in an attempt to help the victim, she said. The man was transported to a hospital in critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds. He later died.
The Maybach is “quite an expensive vehicle,” Parish noted. Maybachs are exclusive luxury cars that cost more than $400,000 — and up.
The car, which has a Florida license plate, was damaged from multiple gunshots, and police recovered shell casings along the interstate.
Authorities do not have a motive or suspect, Parish said.
The investigation is continuing and police urge anyone with information on the case to come forward.
