The Roswell City Council has voted to accept a federal grant of $11,120 to partially fund the purchase of bulletproof vests for city law enforcement personnel, and to seek a separate grant of $2,000 to support a police “Heroes and Helpers” holiday program.

The ballistic vests grant, by the U.S. Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Assistance, will require a 50 percent match from the city, for a total expenditure of $22,240. The city will tap the Police Department Machinery Equipment Operating budget for the money, staff said in a report to the council.

Separately, the council approved seeking a 2018 Community Engagement Funds Grant from Target Corp. to support Heroes and Helpers, which pairs Roswell police officers with children and families to shop at the Roswell Target store for holiday presents.

This year’s event is to take place Saturday, Dec. 15. No city match is required for the grant.
