Roswell council to discuss transit sales tax

By Ralph Ellis
Sept 10, 2010

The Roswell City Council will talk Monday night about a penny sales tax to pay for regional transportation improvements.

Under legislation passed earlier this year, the 10 counties in metro Atlanta can vote in 2010 to impose a 1-cent sales tax on themselves to pay for transportation projects. The Roswell council will consider a resolution saying it supports the tax, but only if the other counties join Fulton and DeKalb counties in forming a regional mass transit system.

Fulton and DeKalb already support MARTA with a penny sales tax. Roswell Mayor Jere Wood said he doesn’t want Fulton and DeKalb paying 2 cents in sales taxes for regional transportation while the other counties end up paying only 1 cent.

Other North Fulton mayors support the resolution, but only the city council in tiny Mountain Park has approved it. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. in Roswell City Hall, 38 Hill St.
