A beloved Rockmart High School assistant principal and coach died Tuesday at the age of 36 after a short cancer fight.

Coach Corey Wayne Godfrey of Cartersville, formerly of Rockmart and Screven counties, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday morning, according to an obituary for Freeman Harris Funeral Home.

He was diagnosed with colon and liver cancer in August. Despite successful treatment that shrunk the tumor, a blood infection and clot led to cardiac arrest, the family posted on a GoFundMe page.

Godfrey leaves behind a wife and two children.
