The milkshake cooler at a Steak ‘n Shake on North Druid Hills Road was not clean and the milkshake toppings were stored on the floor, according to a DeKalb County health inspector.

Milk and ice cream had accumulated around the inside and outside of the cooler and staff was told to clean it right away, and to clean the cooler more frequently.

There were also gnats and flies over the milkshake cooler as well as by the ice machine, in the back storage area, over the mop sink area and near the back door where the trash is kept. The facility was given two days to minimize the presence of pets.

Steak ‘n Shake, 2845 N. Druid Hills Road, Atlanta, failed the routine inspection with 59/U. Previous scores were 84/B and 78/C.

In other code violations, numerous food items in the prep top cooler were at unsafe temperatures. Mushrooms, noodles, peppers and onions were all discarded. Cooked sausage in the cooler was also thrown away for improper cooling. It had not cooled within the proper time frame to prevent the risk of bacteria contamination.

The inspector also investigated a customer complaint about mold in the sweet tea. The inspector checked both nozzles on sweet tea containers and found no mold or mold-like substance. The nozzles, which had been cleaned that morning, were rewashed because the dishwasher had not been sanitizing properly.

The sweet tea at this Steak ‘n Shake is prepared every six hours, and usually sooner because it doesn’t last that long, according to the staff.

Steak ‘n Shake will be re-inspected.
