Repairing 'Spaceship Earth'

Sculptor Eino rebuilds his creation

The sculptor Eino, who goes by only one name, is back at Kennesaw State University to rebuild the $1 million sculpture called "Spaceship Earth" that collapsed in December. The sculpture is a 15-foot-tall globe made of 88 pieces of blue Brazilian quartzite and decorated with bronze accents. It was commissioned by the founders of the California-based PowerBar to honor environmentalist David Brower. His bronze statue stands atop the globe.

There is a crack, yet to be repaired, in "Spaceship Earth." Eino (pronounced AY-no) , who lives in Nevada, arrived on the KSU campus in late June. He spends long days on the site, bringing along a coffeemaker that sits on the sculpture's black granite foundation so he can make his own brew --- half Sumatran, half Bolivian coffee. At the site, he reviews and separates the pieces with the help of an assistant. Many of the rocks have patches of dried adhesive. Some are chipped at the edges.

Eino, who spent some time sculpting works in Jasper in the late 1990s, has built a cylinder-shaped base for the globe, instead of the concave-shaped bottom he originally designed. A wider base provides more sound footing.

Eino only needs a few materials from Europe to complete the work. He leaves for Italy in early October for an exhibit and will return to finish his masterpiece.

Eino, whose hands are shown here, was heartbroken in December when the sculpture collapsed. In the broken pieces of"Spaceship Earth" he saw an appropriate analogy: "This should be the symbol for all us to wake up, " he said at the time. "Our Earth is falling apart."
