A rabid raccoon was found at Graves Park in Norcross on Sept. 14, Gwinnett County officials said.

Park workers saw the raccoon “acting in a strange manner” Friday afternoon, according to a county release. They were able to “contain” the raccoon until workers from the Department of Animal Welfare and Enforcement arrived.

The raccoon was removed from the park, euthanized and tested for rabies. That test came back positive, according to the county.

Rabies causes otherwise nocturnal animals, like raccoons, to become active during the day. Rabid animals could behave normally, or they could act strange and exhibit behavior including aggression, avoiding food and water, foaming at the mouth and having trouble moving.

If you are bitten or scratched by an unfamiliar animal, whether wild or domesticated, immediately seek medical attention. If you believe you may have been infected with rabies, contact the Gwinnett County Health Department at 770-339-4260.
