Powder Springs apparent murder-suicide

February 18, 2010 a McEachern High School football standout was killed early Thursday in an apparent murder-suicide at his family's Powder Springs home.The incident happened overnight on Woodcrest Drive, in a neighborhood off Brownsville Road just southwest of downtown Powder Springs.

Police identified one of the deceased as Rajaan Bennett, who earlier this month signed to play football next fall at Vanderbilt University.

About 2:30 a.m. Thursday, police got a 911 call from the home, with someone whispering that they needed help. Officers arrived about four minutes later, and "as they approached and knocked on the door, they heard several gunshots, " Powders Springs police Major Charles Spann told the AJC.

Immediately after the four or five shots rang out, Narjaketha Bennett, 37, and Taiwan Hunter, 32, ran from the house, hysterical, police said. Hunter had been struck by at least one gunshot, Powder Springs police Lt. Matt Boyd said. Shortly thereafter, two juveniles also exited the home uninjured, according to Boyd.

The Cobb County police SWAT team was called to the scene, and when officers entered the home, they found two people who had been shot and killed. One was Rajaan Bennett, 18.
