After months of complaining, Sandy Springs residents may finally get some recognition from the U.S. Postal Service, Channel 2 Action News reports.
If residents agree to the change, postal officials say they’ll designate at least seven ZIP codes as belonging to the North Fulton city, not the city of Atlanta as has long been the case.
It’s an issue of financial concern to Sandy Springs residents who shop online; if their addresses automatically come up in search engines as being in Atlanta, consumers are charged 8 percent sales tax, as opposed to Sandy Springs’ 7 percent.
"I'm retired and trying to watch what I spend,” Sandy Springs resident Charles Salter told Channel 2. “That's a valid point that all of us need to be conscious of."
Sandy Springs Mayor Eva Galambos said, "I think (postal officials) realized the equity of the situation. It turns out we're not the only jurisdiction in the United States that's had this problem."
Galambos said that if a majority of Sandy Springs homeowners and businesses say in a survey that they favor the change, the Postal Service has agreed to change the default city to Sandy Springs for ZIP codes 30319, 30327, 30328, 30338, 30339, 30342 and 30350.
Post office boxes in ZIP codes 30358, 31150 and 31156 also could see a change in cities.
Postal officials also will require the city to hold public hearings and set up a hotline for residents with questions.
The City Council is expected to take up the issue Tuesday.
