Atlanta police are seeking a carjacker caught on camera outside Phipps Plaza on Sunday.
Fifteen seconds after a man parked his 2015 Mercedes S550 in the mall parking lot and started walking toward the entrance, an unidentified man jumped from the passenger seat of a dark sport utility vehicle and pulled a black pistol, surveillance video shows.
The carjacker demanded the victim drop his car keys, which he did, according to the police report. The victim told police he also dropped his wallet, but the man only took the car keys. The car’s owner wasn’t hurt.
Another 15 seconds later, the video shows the unidentified man inside the now-stolen car, beginning to back out of the parking space as the car’s owner runs toward the mall.
The entire incident, from the car’s owner parking to the stolen car leaving the lot, took 40 seconds.
The carjack suspect was described as a 5-foot-9 to 5-foot-11-inch man with a mustache, police said. He wore dark clothing with a large logo on the back side of the shirt, police said. Police said they later learned the dark-colored SUV, which followed behind the victim’s vehicle onto Lenox Road and headed toward Ga. 400, was a newer model GMC Yukon.
