Conyers police have charged a 20-year-old man with murder in the death of his girlfriend's 3-year-old daughter.

Police said the suspect, Raul Solis, admitted shaking the girl, Edna Figueroa, while she was misbehaving.

Edna died Sunday at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston. Her injuries resulted "from being shaken" and from "impacts to the head," police said.

Solis is charged with murder and first-degree cruelty to children. The girl's mother, Yaneth DeLaCruz Alvarez, 21, is charged with second-degree cruelty to children for "failing to supervise" her daughter, police said. That failure contributed to Edna's death, police said.

Both suspects have been arrested.

Police began investigating after Alvarez and Solis brought Edna to Rockdale Medical Center Saturday.

"Edna Figueroa was unconscious, unresponsive and having difficulty breathing," police said in a release. "The victim was suffering from an extensive brain hemorrhage, and no clear explanation for the injury was provided by Solis or Alvarez."

Edna was taken to Egleston later Saturday. She died the following day.
