Human remains were discovered Thursday morning in Newton County.

A wallet with identification and a cell phone were recovered at the scene, but the identity of the person was not immediately released pending confirmation by the medical examiner, Newton County sheriff Capt. Keith Crums told Channel 2 Action News.

The remains were found by a survey crew in an area of Hwy 81 and SR 162, about 50 yards off the roadway, Crums said.

The medical examiner will also investigate the cause of death.
