A 4-year-old boy was recovering Tuesday after accidentally shooting himself in the head at a home in south DeKalb County, police said.

DeKalb police spokeswoman Mekka Parish said the incident happened about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at a house in the 3800 block of Cedar Trace Lane off Panthersville Road.

Parish told the AJC that detectives believe the boy went into a bedroom and found the gun in a box.

"While the child was handling the gun it discharged," Parish said. "The child sustained a graze wound to the head."

Parish said the boy was taken to a local hospital for treatment and was in "moderate" condition.

"At this point in the investigation, no charges are pending," Parish said Tuesday afternoon.
