The Winder Police Department painted a patrol car pink to help raise awareness of breast cancer.

Lt. Chris Cooper announced the addition to the fleet and said the Chevrolet Impala would be used as “a normal patrol vehicle” for the entire month of October.

Akins Ford donated the time and resources to paint the car pink, Cooper said.

Except for skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society, and as many as one in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime.

Cooper said several employees of the Winder Police Department have personally been affected by breast cancer.

The pink car has been driven by several officers, appeared Oct. 1 at the Paint Gwinnett Pink 5K Race and was the official pace car for the Great Gwinnett Road Run 5K on Oct. 2.
