Police blame death on street racing

18-year-old lost control; other teen driver charged.

An 18-year-old Suwanee man died in a crash that Gwinnett County police said occurred during a street race.

Alexander W. Lebar was killed Friday afternoon when his car spun out of control at a curve on Suwanee Creek Road and struck a mailbox and tree.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, Gwinnett police said.

Investigators determined that Lebar and a friend, 18-year-old Reymond C. Edwards of Suwanee, were racing each other when Lebar crashed about 4:45 p.m.

Edwards drove on after the crash but later returned, police said.

Neither Edwards nor his passenger was injured.

Police arrested Edwards on charges of racing and reckless driving.

He was released Saturday on bond from the Gwinnett County Detention Center.

Police said alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
