The pilot of a small plane was flown to an area hospital Monday after a crash at Atlanta Motorsports Park in Dawson County, according to Channel 2 Action News.

The pilot, who took off from the Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport in Gainesville, had just refueled a single engine plane in Gainesville when an unknown mechanical condition forced him to make an emergency landing just before 8:30 a.m., Dawson County Deputy Fire Chief Tim Satterfield told the news station.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident involving the Piper P32R-300 aircraft, according to the agency.

The plane holds seven passengers, but the pilot was the only person on board, officials said. He was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center. His condition is unknown at this time.

According to the FAA, the unidentified pilot was headed to the Gary/Chicago International Airport in Gary, Ind.
