Kitchen and bath designers are descending upon Atlanta for the Kitchen/Bath Industry Show and Conference at the Georgia World Congress Center.
The trade-only event is closed to the public and runs through Sunday. It's expected to draw 30,000 visitors to the city with an estimated economic impact of $18.7 million, according to the Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Suzie Williford, president of the National Kitchen & Bath Association, which operates this weekend's show, talked to the AJC.
Q: What are you seeing with kitchen design trends or new appliances?
A: We see a lot of new, innovative products, some of them with quite a bit of emphasis on sustainability and being environmentally responsible. There's new innovations on more commercial-type cooking, new countertops. A lot of bright colors, a lot of commercial-looking appliances.
Q: What are some green or energy-saving products for the bathroom that you've seen?
A: There are faucets that have sensors on them to use less water, and there are the dual-flush toilets, products that make you smarter with your use of the water and the heat.
Q: If you had $200 to spend to update your kitchen, what would you buy?
A: I'd probably get a new pull-out faucet or maybe I'd get a soap dispenser or there might be a new microwave that I'd want.
Q: With the economy the way it is, what would you tell people who are hesitant to spend money on redoing their kitchen or bathroom?
A: This is the perfect time. In a crowded market, where there's a glut of houses, whether it's new construction or remodel, if you want to sell your house first, you've got to have the best kitchen and bath, because that's what makes the house. This would be the time to do it, instead of waiting.
Q: What does former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who will be speaking at the show, have to say about kitchen and bath design?
A: What's so funny is we've had a couple of opportunities to talk to him about him coming, and he's so excited to come because he just remodeled his kitchen and bathroom. So he's pumped about it. He understands our industry.
