A fire at the Stanton Crest Apartments Thursday night displaced 17 people, including seven adults and ten children.

The East Point Fire Department responded to the apartment complex in the 2300 block of Delowe Drive around 10:15 p.m. and discovered heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof of one of the complex buildings, according to Renita Shelton, spokesperson for the East Point Fire Department.

According to Shelton, the flames damages four apartment units, including one that was nearly destroyed.  Two of the units damaged had water damage.

It took firefighters about 40 minutes to knock the fire down and there were no injuries reported, firefighters said.

Two pets, including a turtle and hamster, were rescued from the apartment complex during the fire.

The American Red Cross was called in to assist the families displaced by the fire.
