As of Friday, all garbage service providers doing business in Peachtree City will be required to offer curbside recycling as part of their base rates.

The City Council approved contracts with four companies last Thursday: CLM Sanitation; Republic/Allied/All South/BFI; Waste Industries/Cardinal; and Waste Management. The quarterly base rates for the approved companies range from $48 to $66 per month. The base rates include a $1 franchise fee that will help fund anti-litter programs in the city.

Curbside recycling previously was offered by some companies, but often for an additional charge. Companies may continue to charge for additional services such as yard debris, bulk waste and additional containers.

“Customer recycling is not mandatory,” said Betsy Tyler, Peachtree City’s public information officer, “but garbage companies have to offer it.” However, she said, “Ultimately the goal of this [service requirement] is to encourage more people to participate.”

The Peachtree City Recycling Center on Rockaway Road will continue to operate during its usual hours, 1-4:30 p.m. Wednesdays and 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturdays. For more information, see www.peachtree-city.org.
