A businessman wants to meet with Snellville residents Thursday night to hash out concerns over his plans to build a large pawn shop on U.S. 78.

Paul Slifko of Hill Top Pawn shop wants to relocate and construct a 5,500-square-foot facility near U.S. 78 and Grayson Parkway.

Over the past few weeks, residents in the Summit Chase subdivision, which sits about 4,100 feet from the proposed site, have expressed opposition in public comments and e-mails to city leaders.

"The concerns I've heard addressed could be characterized as abstract," said attorney Michael Sullivan, who represents Slifko. "They just don't like pawn shops."

Twice, city leaders have postponed voting on Slifko's request for a conditional use permit, a requirement for pawn shops, to give Slifko time to allay resident unease.

The meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. at Snellville City Hall. The City Council is expected to vote on the matter April 12.
