A man who allegedly threatened suicide and then turned a gun on Paulding County Sheriff’s deputies was shot and wounded by the officers Thursday night, authorities said.

The situation began about 8 p.m. in the vicinity of Boulder Run and Virgie Ballentine Drive off Bill Carruth Parkway, according to Paulding sheriff’s Sgt. Brandon Gurley.

When deputies went to a home to investigate a report that a stolen vehicle had been located, a man there pulled a handgun and threatened suicide, Gurley said.

After several hours of negotiations, the man allegedly pointed a gun at the deputies, and they responded by opening fire. The man was seriously wounded.

“We are told he has active warrants for robbery and aggravated assault along with other charges out of Cobb County,” Gurley said in a phone interview with the AJC shortly after midnight.

“We’re not confirming the name of the person due to the condition he’s in and he’s receiving treatment,” Gurley said, adding that family members also needed to be contacted. The man was being airlifted to an Atlanta hospital, probably Grady Memorial, he said.
