Part of Atlanta’s Memorial Drive closing for emergency repair to hole

A busy block of Memorial Drive, located on the stretch between Oakland Cemetery and the restaurant Home Grown, will close due to an emergency repair on a sewer line.

Memorial Drive will be closed between Pearl Street and Chester Avenue in southeast Atlanta beginning at 7 a.m. Wednesday. It will remain closed 24-hours a day until the repair is complete in about three days, a press release said.

Crews will repair a hole that formed at the top of a 42- by 48-inch brick sewer main.

Residents and businesses will still be able to access mail and package delivery, emergency services and trash pick-up. Motorists are urged by city officials to avoid the area if possible, but traffic control measures and signs will be in place to guide them around the work zone.

The detours are as follows

• Eastbound: Turn right on Pearl Street; left on Old Flat Shoals Road to Chester Avenue; left on Chester Avenue; right back on Memorial Drive to continue east.

• Westbound: Turn left onto Chester Avenue to Old Flat Shoals Road SE; right on Pearl Street; left on Memorial Drive to continue west.

In other traffic news, a northwest Atlanta road will be closed for about six weeks beginning Monday.
