Atlanta’s Historic Oakland Cemetery was named the 2014 Great Place winner in the Atlanta Regional Commission’s 16th annual Developments of Excellence Awards.

The Commission honors trend-setting private and public development projects that advance the goals and policies of it’s regional development plan.

The award is given to a place in metro Atlanta that represents livability and sustainability, and serves as regional models for future growth.

Important Atlanta milestones are represented at Oakland including Civil War soldiers, 25 former Atlanta mayors including Maynard Jackson Atlanta’s first African-American mayor, six former Georgia governors, golfer Bobby Jones and Margaret Mitchell Marsh, author of “Gone with the Wind.”

Piedmont Park won the 2013 Great Place award and in 2012, Historic Fourth Ward Park was the recipient.
