Five units in a Norcross apartment building were damaged after a fire burning in a fireplace went out of control late Friday night.

No one was hurt from the fire at the Highland Lakes Apartments, Gwinnett County Fire Captain Tommy Rutledge said.

The fire apparently started after residents in one apartment had been using the fireplace for about an hour. One of the residents noticed an orange glow over the balcony around 10 p.m. and went outside to find that the roof was on fire, Rutledge said.

The man called 911 and then started knocking on apartment doors to alert other residents, Rutledge said.

Gwinnett firefighters arrived to find that the blaze had spread to other apartments. The roof was also starting to collapse, Rutledge said.

The fire caused heavy damage to two top-floor apartments. It also led to moderate smoke and water damage to three units on the bottom floor, Rutledge said.
