A Newnan police officer was arrested Tuesday on charges of child molestation.
Todd Lengsfeld, 34, is accused of having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl, Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokesman John Bankhead said Wednesday.
On July 27, the Newnan Police Department opened an internal investigation into Lengsfeld’s off-duty activities, said Newnan Police spokeswoman Officer Gina Snider.
The investigation focused on Lengsfeld’s inappropriate contact with a female juvenile by use of a cell phone issued to him for official business by the Newnan Coweta Crime Suppression Unit.
The investigation revealed Lengsfeld was violating several Newnan Police and City of Newnan personnel policies, and that his conduct may have been criminal in nature.
GBI was contacted on July 28 to investigate the possibility of criminal activity.
Lengsfeld was placed on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of the internal investigation and the criminal investigation.
On Tuesday, Lengsfeld was terminated for internal policy violations.
He was an 11-year veteran of the Newnan Police Department.
