Georgia Southern University in Statesboro welcomed Brooks Keel as the college's 12th president Monday.

Keel, a native of Augusta, previously worked as vice chancellor for research and economic development at Louisiana State University. He also was a professor of biological sciences.

He has degrees from the Medical College of Georgia and Augusta College, which is now known as Augusta State University.

Keel replaces Bruce Grube, who stepped down as president at the end of 2009.

Georgia Southern enrolls about 19,000 students.
