Murder conviction in shooting over drug money
A 19-year-old Atlanta man was convicted of murder Friday in the shooting death of a relative he argued with over drug money, officials said.
Calvin Wiggins will be sentenced Tuesday on charges of felony murder, murder and aggravated assault in the death of Mahdi Thomas, 31. Wiggins will receive at least a mandatory life sentence from visiting DeKalb County Judge Anne Workman, who presided over the case.
Prosecutors, in a press release from District Attorney Paul Howard's office, said Thomas was shot Sept. 27, 2007, after the men had a dispute over money from drug sales. Earlier the same day, Wiggins and Thomas stole several pounds of marijuana and cash from a drug dealer, prosecutors said.
While splitting the money and drugs, Wiggins became unhappy with his share and shot Thomas two times at the Headland Drive Citgo Gas station in East Point, the press release said. The victim survived two days and identified Wiggins as the shooter.
