The North Fulton Service Center was broken into over the Memorial Day weekend, and someone made off with more than $53,000 in cash and checks from the tag office, Sandy Springs police said.

Employees of the tag office, located in the 7700 block of Roswell Road, discovered the break-in Tuesday. They noticed several lock boxes and safes had been forced open, Lt. Steve Rose said.

Authorities believe the thief or thieves entered the building from the loading dock, Rose said.

Some of the internal surveillance cameras apparently had been turned off, and Fulton County authorities are checking to see if any of the other cameras recorded footage of the break-in, he said.

"While we are unable to comment on the ongoing investigation of the burglary, we want to ensure citizens that the North Fulton Service Center has security measures in place. Those measures have resulted in no previous history of break-ins at this facility," said a statement issued by Fulton County.

Officials are working with Sandy Springs police on the investigation and will assess the need for any security enhancements once the work is completed, the statement said.
