A Gwinnett County police officer Tasered an intoxicated moped driver who was resisting arrest early Saturday, officials said.

The incident happened around 4 a.m. near Lawrenceville.

According to a police report, an officer watched as Brandon Ramon Brown turned his tagless moped onto Sugarloaf Parkway before "swerving left and right" and almost hitting a curb. The officer pulled Brown over and reported "a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath."

A second officer arrived on scene.

Brown reportedly told police he'd had two "regular sized" beers about three hours earlier. After failing an eye test, Brown said he was "too nervous to continue" with other field sobriety evaluations.

He also declined to take a breathalyzer.

According to police, officers attempted to place Brown under arrest but he "refused to put his hands behind his back." He "flexed" his arms multiple times and both officers wrestled him to the ground.

"From the ground, Brown continued to flex his arms to the front, resisting arrest," the incident report said. "I gave Brown verbal commands to bring his left hand to the back, but Brown refused and kept his left hand under his body."

The second officer then shot his Taser into Brown's upper back, the report said.

An ambulance was called to check on Brown, and paramedics cleared him to be transported to the Gwinnett County jail.

Brown, who was born in 1979, was charged with DUI, obstruction of a police officer, "must be licensed to operate moped" and various traffic charges. His driver's license had previously been suspended, police said.

As of Monday morning, Brown was being held without bond on the obstruction charge.
