Acting on two measures concerning city parks, the Milton City Council had first reading of an anti-smoking ordinance update that would prohibit vaping at the parks; and accepted a state grant of up to $100,000 for a new fishing pier at Providence Park.

“It shall be unlawful for a person to use any tobacco product or vapor product on any city-owned property, other than in designated areas, if any,” the ordinance revision says. The measure includes smokeless tobacco as a “tobacco product,” and defines vapor product as from a device creating vapor from nicotine or other substance, to be inhaled. The ordinance update returns to the council for a second reading on May 4.

Separately, the council accepted a Land and Water Conservation Fund Grant from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources to replace the fishing pier at Providence Park. An earlier pier was removed after it was found to be structurally unsafe. The grant requires a 50 percent match from the city; if the entire project costs $200,000, the city would have to cover $100,000.
