An early morning fire, possibly caused by an electrical storm, has destroyed one of the historic homes built by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in Warm Springs.
At 5 a.m. Tuesday, a state employee discovered the charred remains of the McCarthy Cottage that Roosevelt built in 1927, according to Sam Hall, with the Georgia Department of Labor. The cottage is separate from the Little White House, where FDR spent time during his presidency. A cottage adjacent to the McCarthy Cottage also burned down. The E. T. Curtis Cottage was built in 1928, according to Hall.
The McCarthy Cottage is the first home Roosevelt built for himself in Warm Springs. He built his more well-known Little White House in 1932. HBO used the McCarthy Cottage as a principal set for the movie “Warm Springs” in 2004. The movie won the Emmy award for best TV movie in 2005. FRAN JEFFRIES

University System of Georgia employees will pay about 5 percent more for health insurance premiums under steps the State Board of Regents took Tuesday. The system has more than 40,000 employees.
The system expects to save about $30 million by limiting access in preferred-provider plans -- a move that affects about 6 percent of those covered.
Also, about 780 employees will lose insurance because the regents increased the minimum number of hours people must work to be eligible from 20 hours to 30. This will save about $1.5 million and mirrors what other states have done, officials said. LAURA DIAMOND

The University of Georgia is among the research institutions that will share a $4.8 million federal grant to study a new rabies vaccine.
Philadelphia-based Thomas Jefferson University received the National Institutes of Health grant to test the vaccine, which has the potential to cure the virus infection. Currently, an unvaccinated person infected with rabies that spreads to the brain has little chance of survival. The Medical College of Wisconsin and the Institute for Hepatitis and Virus Research will also share the grant. MISTY WILLIAMS
