Kudzoo is a mom. The 17-year-old western lowland gorilla at Zoo Atlanta gave birth to her second offspring Monday morning. The baby, whose sex won’t be known for several weeks since gorilla mothers keep their infants close to their bodies, is the third grandchild of the late Willie B., the beloved silverback gorilla who died in 2000. Zoo Atlanta houses 24 gorillas, the nation’s largest collection. Since 1988, 19 have been born at the zoo and 17 still reside there, including Macy Baby, 5, the first offspring of Kudzoo and her 21-year-old partner, Taz. MELISSA RUGGIERI

The State Board of Regents Tuesday approved the new University of Georgia Foundation, which was formed by merging the UGA Foundation and the Arch Foundation.

UGA President Michael Adams told the regents he was grateful for the merger and the support both foundations provided.

The regents directed the university to sever ties with the UGA Foundation in 2005 after the group failed to submit an agreement outlining its relationship with the university. The rift between the university and the foundation began after Adams declined to extend athletic director Vince Dooley's contract. The Arch Foundation was then formed to raise money for the university.

The merger was announced last month.

Georgia will not cash in on Florida Gov. Rick Scott’s rejection of $2 billion in federal high speed rail money. Georgia had applied for $22.6 million to build a $38 million new Amtrak station but was not among the winners released this week. Winners included $795 million to upgrade northeast corridor service, to up to 160 mph. Smaller grants will improve a North Carolina line between Charlotte and Richmond, and help develop a line between Dallas and Houston.
