The Georgia Department of Human Services hopes to raise awareness about the problem if elder abuse by encouraging people to wear purple on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15.
If you suspect someone is being abused, neglected or exploited, individuals should contact the Division of Aging Services, Adult Protective Services Unit at 1-866-55-AGING or 1,866-552-4464.
But how can you tell if someone is being abused? There are some warning signs. Signs include unexplained bruises, cigarette burns, lack of medical care, malnutrition or dehydration, sudden change in finances and accounts, altered wills and unusual bank withdrawals.

About 82 percent of Georgia's lawmakers have college degrees compared to a national average 75 percent, according to a study released Monday.
The Chronicle of Higher Education examined whether and where each state legislator went to college. California had the most educated Legislature, with about 90 percent of lawmakers holding a bachelor's degree or higher. New Hampshire ranked last at 53 percent.

The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools will recognize former President Bill Clinton with a lifetime achievement award during their Atlanta convention.
Officials said Clinton will be honored for nearly twenty years of charter school support.
According to the alliance, when Clinton was elected there was only one charter school open and by the time his administration left office, there were over 1,700 nationwide.
Clinton is scheduled to speak at the 2011 National Charter Schools Conference on June 21 at the Georgia World Congress Center. D.AILEEN DODD
