Only three cities had more people injured in automobile accidents than Atlanta, according to a AAA report that examined 2009 traffic data.
More than 62,000 people sustained injuries on Atlanta's roads that year while 498 died in car accidents. The city ranked 6th in traffic-related fatalities, the report revealed.
Crashes, meanwhile, cost the metro area nearly $11 million in 2009, a figure that trailed only Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York, the study found. CHRISTIAN BOONE

The chief judge of the federal appeals court in Atlanta said Thursday he will ask his fellow judges at their next meeting to have the court begin publishing its argument calendars online.
"I know of no reason why we couldn't do that," Chief Judge Joel Dubina said. ""I certainly believe in transparency and believe the public has a right to know what we do." The court is the only federal appeals court in the nation that does not publish its calendars online. Law professors say this makes it difficult for the public to know what cases are before the court. BILL RANKIN

The Georgia Water Coalition will release its "Dirty Dozen" list of of worst offenses to Georgia's water supply at an event at 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. today at the Alcovy Conservation Center, 11600 Hazelbrand Road N.E., Covington. Sally Bethea, executive director of the environmental watchdog group, Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, said the abuses cited in the list are "the consequences of an under-funded state environmental agency and a lack of political will to aggressively enforce laws that protect our environment and communities."
