Gov. Nathan Deal has appointed a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan to head up the state's Army National Guard.
Lt. Col. Joe Jarrard of Dahlonega will be the state's deputy adjutant general and will oversee the Army wing of the agency. Jarrard served under Gen. David Patraeus in Afghanistan and served two active duty tours in Iraq.
Jarrard takes over for Major Gen. Maria Britt, who announced she would step down after Adjutant General Terry Nesbitt retired. Deal named state Sen. Jim Butterworth, R-Cornelia, as Nesbitt's successor. Butterworth is a Delta Air Lines pilot who flew B-1 bombers for the Georgia Air National Guard. AARON GOULD SHENIN

City and county officials from across the state will convene in Gainesville Monday for training on Georgia’s tough new immigration enforcement law.
The Georgia Municipal Association and Association of County Commissioners of Georgia are hosting the training session at the Georgia Mountains Center, 301 Main St. SW.
Because of limited space, officials seeking to attend must first register with the ACCG or GMA. So far, 300 have signed up to participate. Plus, 200 have registered for a second session scheduled for Sept. 26 in Tifton.
Parts of Georgia’s new immigration law are tied up in federal court. But other provisions took effect on July 1, including some aimed directly at state and local government officials.

A ceremony will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday to rename the athletic field at Atlanta's Grady Stadium after Eddie S. Henderson, Sr. Henderson was the first black Georgian to become a certified athletic director, and he served as the first black coach at Grady High. He went onto be an assistant principal at Carver High, principal of the defunct Archer High and director of athletics for the district. Henderson passed away in 2001. JAIME SARRIO
