Cherokee County Environmental Health officials reported that a raccoon which recently attacked a local dog tested positive for rabies.
A few rabies cases are typically reported in wild animals each spring and summer in Cherokee County.
The attack occurred on Hightower Trail in Ball Ground, May 3, however, the dog's owners were not exposed to the disease because the pet had a rabies vaccination. The animal must be kept in home quarantine for 45 days
If bitten by an unfamiliar animal, experts say to wash the wound with soap and water and seek medical help.
