An Alpharetta man who participated in the D-Day landing at Omaha Beach, June 6, 1944, has been awarded the French Legion of Honour Medal.

John R. Hannahan, who died April 8, 2010, served in the U.S. Army 246th Combat Engineers Battalion in World War II.  The Legion of Honour Medal, the highest award given by the French government, was extended to those soldiers who were instrumental in the country's liberation from German occupation.

Hannahan, a Michigan native, is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

His daughter, Denise Hannahan, also of Alpharetta, said her father was a modest man.

"We think he would have accepted this honor and medal with sincere humility on behalf of the whole battalion," she said.  "We as a family are proud of his service to the country.

A new 24-hour mobile crisis service for people with developmental disabilities having behavior-related issues will provide temporary care at home instead of in a mental health facility.

Launched this week, the Georgia Crisis Response System is part of an ongoing push by the state to move mentally ill and developmentally disabled individuals out of mental hospitals and into the community. The effort stems from an agreement between the state and U.S. Department of Justice, following an investigation into the abuse and deaths of patients in state institutions.

The crisis line number is 1-(800) 715-4225. MISTY WILLIAMS
