Students wanting to be part of Emory University's freshman class will face some stiff competition.
Emory College of Arts & Sciences received a record 17,489 applications for just 1,350 slots, according to figures released Thursday.
About 20 percent of the students who applied live abroad.
The previous record was set in 2008 when Emory received 17,446 applications. Applications increased by 3 percent this year and the college has seen a 69 percent increase over the past decade.
Students will know by late March if they were admitted. LAURA DIAMOND

Chancellor Hank Huckaby said Thursday the University System of Georgia must make better use of online learning and formed a committee to come up with suggestions.
Southern Polytechnic State University President Lisa Rossbacher will lead the nine-member group. They will submit recommendations this summer.
The system has more than 230 online programs and Huckaby has said expanding this option will help more people earn a college degree. The system is working to improve graduation rates as part of Gov. Nathan Deal's Complete College Georgia initiative. LAURA DIAMOND
