Mayors to meet with DeKalb neighborhoods to discuss annexation

Avondale Estates Mayor Pro Tem Terry Giager will lunch this week with representatives of Rio Circle, an important 60-acre commercial district that wants into Decatur though it’s included on Avondale’s wish-list map. Meanwhile, Decatur Mayor Jim Baskett will listen to the Medlock neighborhood that wants into the city along with nearby Suburban Plaza. But Baskett recently reiterated that Decatur wants only the shopping and not the 1,300 homes, which would burden the school system. Later this month, both cities will also meet with Decatur Terrace — a 147-property residential district that’s on Avondale’s map but wants into Decatur — and the DeKalb Farmers Market, whose owner says he wants to remain in unincorporated DeKalb.
