U.S. marshals shot and wounded a man early Wednesday while executing an arrest warrant at a hotel near Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

According to East Point police, members of the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force went to a room at the Crowne Plaza hotel on Virginia Avenue shortly after midnight to arrest a man wanted for the sale of methamphetamine and possession of explosives.

"They confirmed that he was in the room, and when they went to knock on the [door], they didn't get an answer," East Point police Sgt. Allyn Glover told the AJC.

The marshals broke through the door, and "upon entry, the suspect challenged them with a handgun, and they were forced to shoot the suspect," Glover said.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in stable condition.

The MARTA bomb squad was called in as a precaution to check the suspect's car for explosives, according to Glover.

"Luckily, in the room and the car, we found none," he said.
