Marietta police officer hit by vehicle

Aug 3, 2012

A Marietta police officer was seriously injured Thursday afternoon when he was hit by a vehicle while directing traffic, the department said.

The incident occurred just after 2 p.m. on the Canton Road Connector north of Church Street extension.

Officer James McClure, 26, was trying to stop northbound traffic to allow an emergency vehicle to leave the scene of an earlier accident when he was hit, Marietta police spokesman Michael Gardner said.

Christopher Peyton, 52, of Marietta failed to stop his silver Nissan Titan, hitting a stopped black Ford F-150 driven by 62-year-old James Dorden of Marietta, Gardner said. The collision caused the truck to hit McClure.

McClure, who has been with the Marietta Police Department for two months and in law enforcement for four years, was transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. No one else was hurt.

The investigation is continuing, and charges are being evaluated, Gardner said. Anyone with information on the incident was asked to call Officer Geoff Culpepper at 770-794-5357.
