Man wanted for Sandy Springs shooting killed during New York robbery

A man wanted for shooting a teenager at a Sandy Springs apartment complex a year ago was himself shot and killed in New York Thursday after he robbed an East Harlem pharmacy, police said.

Rudolph Wyatt, 23, was shot twice by a retired police officer as he fled the pharmacy that he had just robbed of painkillers and cash late Thursday morning.

Sandy Springs police Capt. Steve Rose said that Wyatt was the man who shot 19-year-old Julian Wilson six times in the back outside an Abernathy Road apartment on April 5, 2011. Wilson survived the shooting.

Rose said that Wyatt was identified by several witnesses as the gunman who walked out of an apartment and shot Wilson. He fled the scene and had been sought as a fugitive for the past year.

According to Rose, Wyatt and an accomplice walked into the New York pharmacy around 11 a.m. Thursday, pulled a gun and demanded money, Oxycodone and Percocet.

"During the robbery, the employee activated a silent alarm," Rose said. "As the pair fled, police were waiting outside the pharmacy."

Rose said Wyatt's accomplice surrendered, but Wyatt fled while firing his weapon at police.

Wyatt was shot and killed by a retired police lieutenant who was at a gas station across the street, Rose said. His accomplice got away during the commotion.

Rose said Wyatt was also suspected in a number of recent pharmacy robberies in the Bronx, and was being sought by New York police in connection with those robberies.
