A man suffered “serious” injuries in a Monday night fire at his home near Lilburn, officials said.

Gwinnett fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge said crews responded to the home on the 1500 block of Fernbrook Court around 5:45 p.m. after a neighbor saw flames and called 911.

“Firefighters arrived to find heavy flames and smoke showing from the garage and a vehicle parked inside,” Rutledge said in a news release. “Fire crews were immediately met with an adult male outside the home with injuries sustained by the fire.”

The man, whose identity was not released, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. His injuries were described as serious but no other information was provided.

It took firefighters about 25 minutes to bring the fire under control, Rutledge said. The blaze caused heavy damage to the home’s garage and the vehicle inside, but the rest of the structure sustained only “minor damage due to residual smoke, heat and water.”

“The exact cause of the fire and the circumstances surrounding the incident are currently under active investigation by the fire department,” Rutledge said.
