A 20-year-old man was rushed to a hospital Monday evening after being pulled from Lake Lanier.

He was underwater for about 45 minutes, authorities said.

Deputy Robin Regan of the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office said crews responded to the area near the Shady Grove Campground around 8:15 p.m. Monday. He said the 20-year-old man, whose name was not released, was swimming with friends and began struggling while making his way back to shore from a buoy.

“He was not able to swim back to shore and he did go under,” Regan said.

The sheriff’s office and fire department responded, and divers found the man around 9 p.m. They “immediately began treating him,” Regan said.

The man was rushed to Northside Hospital-Forsyth, but his condition was unclear.

A friend who tried to save the man was treated on-scene for water inhalation, Regan said.

The Shady Grove Campground is located on Shadburn Ferry Road in Cumming.
