A motorist who was killed when his car ran off I-675 and crashed into a tree earlier this week has been identified as a Stockbridge man, and a trust fund has been set up for his wife and their five children.

David Bishop Sr., an executive I.T. specialist, was killed about 10:35 a.m. Wednesday when his red 1993 Buick LeSabre swerved from left to right, went off the roadway and under the Ga. 42 bridge and ran into a tree, according to Clayton County police.

The motorist was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, and the vehicle’s air bag deployed. The driver was extricated from the wreckage by Clayton County Fire Department personnel and taken to Henry County Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

In an email to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, a spokeswoman for the family said a police investigation found Bishop had fallen asleep at the wheel. He was heading home after working a midnight shift, his family said.

Bishop had volunteered for six years at 4 Rivers/ Feed My People, a Stockbridge food bank and thrift store ministry, according to 4 Rivers spokeswoman Darlene C. Kelley.

Bishop is survived by his wife of 17 years, Rosalind Bishop, and five children ages 1 month through 17 years.

Those wishing to assist the family are asked to donate to the Contribution Account for the David Bishop Sr. Family at the BestBank in the Walmart Supercenter at 1400 Hudson Bridge Road, South Stockbridge, or at any other BestBank branch.
