A man was killed in a crash that left his SUV wrapped around a tree in Buckhead, officials said.

Atlanta police believe 30-year-old Cody Dodson of Vinings was speeding along West Paces Ferry Road about 2 a.m. Friday.

After striking a large rock, the SUV slid sideways and crossed from the westbound to the eastbound lane before leaving the roadway and hitting a tree, Atlanta police spokesman Officer Donald Hannah said.

When emergency crews arrived on the scene of the crash, near the intersection of Randall Mill Road, Dodson was in critical condition, Hannah said.

Dodson, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, died after a few minutes, Hannah said.
